School District to hire Resource Officers

WALLENPAUPACK - Over a quarter million dollars has been allocated in the Wallenpaupack Area School District budget to hire four, armed School Resource Officers in time for the 2013-2014 school year.

The District has begun advertising for a Director of School Security. Once in place, the Director would assist administrators with interviewing and hiring of the three additional officers.

Retired Coast Guard officer visits North Primary

Recently, the Wallenpaupack North Primary School welcomed retired Petty Officer Patrick Brown of the United States Coast Guard.

During his career, he was stationed in North Carolina, New York and Oregon. His visit with all Kindergarten classes culminated a study of the Coast Guard which was highlighted in the book May Day! May Day!

This year’s winners’ of the 2013 Pike/Wayne Envirothon were the Wallenpaupack Area School District team called the Hefty Heifers. Second place went to The Avengers from Wallenpaupack and third went to the Wildlife Warriors of Delaware Valley School District.

The 27th Annual Pike/Wayne Envirothon was held Wednesday, May 7, 2013 at the PPL Environmental Learning Center in Hawley with an exciting day of competition and wild animals.

HAWLEY - The second annual Human Services Fair was offered at Lackawanna College Lake Region Center, April 30th, with a jump in participation by local agencies and a buffet benefitting a new scholarship fund.

Several students at the community college on the top floor of the Hawley Silk Mill make up the Human Services Assistance Committee. The group conducts special fund-raising or collections to help students and others in need. [...]

WALLENPAUPACK - On Thursday, April 11th the students of Wallenpaupack Area High School’s Virtual Business Class took a business trip to New York City to be a part of the 2013 International Trade Show.

These students act as co-workers to run a virtual business, Berry Unltd. Their business specializes in blueberry products and is in partnership with Paupack Blueberry Farm in Paupack and Coutts Blueberry Farm Market near Hawley.

WALLENPAUPACK - Wallenpaupack Area High School held their 2013 Senior Prom, An Enchanted Evening, on Sunday, April 28th at Woodloch Pines Resort.

Erika Maxson of Lake Ariel was named Prom Queen, and the title of Prom King went to Patrick Brown of Tafton.

HAWLEY - On April 12, about 100 to 125 students from four local high schools received valuable practice in how to get a job. "Mock interviews" were conducted by representatives of several area businesses, hosted this year by the Lackawanna College Lake Region Center in Hawley.

EDITOR'S INK - The News Eagle has been made aware that an abbreviation of "Special Education" used in a headline the April 13th edition has been taken with offense by various parents.

An abbreviation was made because the story, on page one, was running in one column and words "special education" could not fit without being too small. As a result, the term "sped" was used, not realizing that the abbreviation is taken with offense in some [...]
