HAWLEY - Wayne and Pike counties lacked coal deposits for mining. These counties, however, proved vital for the transportation of anthracite coal from the mines in the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys, brought in on gravity railroads and shipped on canal boats, and later taken on trains pulled by locomotive.
