Part 2: Civil War vets organize HAWLEY – There was a national organization for the Civil War veterans of the Union Army, Navy and Marines, known as the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.). The organization formed in 1866, the year after the war ended, and continued until 1956 when the last remaining member died.
