The popular Phillies Home Run Derby will be making its annual visit to Honesdale on Saturday, July 12.

The Home Run Derby is being sponsored by the Honesdale Area Jaycees in cooperation with the Philadelphia Phillies.  The starting time has been set for 9:30 am. The contest is open for all boys and girls, ages 7-15. The contest is being held at the Honesdale Little Baseball Association Complex on Grove Street in Honesdale. Official entry forms will be available at the field, the day of the contest.

Home Run Derby uses an automatic pitching machine to throw ten good pitches to each contestant. Points are scored for all fair balls hit, distance hits and home runs. Any ball that hits fair is worth one point, distance hits are worth two points and home runs count for five points. The distance hits and home runs, are well within the range of most hitters. For example, in the “B” division (ages 10-12), the distance hit is 125 feet and the home run is 150 feet. This is considerably shorter than normal Little League fencing. The speed of the pitch, as well as the scoring distances, change with each age division. Home Run Derby is looking to make everyone a hitter.

The Honesdale Area Jaycees, organizers of the Home Run Derby in the Wayne County area, will award a total of 50 prizes. First, second and third place winners in each category will receive a Phillies engraved plaque. These lucky winners will be invited to a regional final to be held later in the summer. From the regionals, winners will compete for the championship, to be held at Citizens Bank Park prior to a Phillies game. The other prizes, Phillies tickets and other baseball related items, will be awarded by a random drawing. This way, every boy and girl entering the contest, is a potential winner, regardless of their score.

Coordinators of the Wayne County area contest said that a separate girls contest will be held. This will provide the opportunity for the girls to hit a softball, and also advance to a girls’ regional final.
