Celebrating their 90th birthdays, Frank and Stefanie Neugebauer sat in excitement at the courtyard on Broad Street outside Fretta’s Italian Specialties store.

Frank, a retired manager at P.J. Clarke’s for 32 years, and Stephanie, a retired property manager, have spent most of their 90 years caring for loved ones — including stray animals — and this past Friday, June 20, 22 friends and family gathered at the courtyard to celebrate with food, champagne and balloons.

To honor their parents, the three daughters — Doris, Ingrid and Heidi — have worked closely with the Milford Enhancement Committee, as a part of the Make a Memory campaign, to place an honorary plaque on the bench on Broad Street. The same bench that Frank and Stephanie would rest on while enjoying lunch and taking in the historic scenery of Milford. Now they can come rest on this marked bench, and feel as if they have placed their own mark or signature on Milford.

The three daughters had the idea to honor their parents with the mark bench. “We’ve been visiting Milford for many years now, and I had got the idea of marking this bench from a friend who had done the same in Central Park, NY. So my sisters got together and decided to do this for my parents,” said Doris, a resident of New York City.

Proceeds from the honorary plaques found throughout Milford are used by the Milford Enhancement Committee to help restore and preserve the clean, unique beauty of Milford’s business district.  The Milford Enhancement Committee (MEC) has raised more than $3 millions through private contributions and grants in the past 11 years. The money has helped improve Milford’s landscape through the introduction of bluestone sidewalks, period pedestrian light fixtures, benches, the re-establishment of tree lines and grass verges, and other landscaping.

MEC members said they would like to congratulate and thank Frank and Stefanie Neugebauer as well as the three daughters, Doris, Ingrid and Heidi for sharing their memories, and contributing to the growing success of Milford.
