Holiday travelers will get a coffee break at interstate rest areas this weekend and the weekend after July 4, which falls on a Friday this year. Free coffee will be available – at various times and locations – on eight days for travelers this year.

Several community groups will be serving up free coffee at rest areas along Interstates 80, 81 and 84 in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The program, which is coordinated through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is designed to encourage drivers to stop and take a break for safety’s sake during the busy traveling holiday.

The safety coffee breaks will be conducted at the following rest areas:

 INTERSTATE 80:

    •    Interstate 80 Eastbound, at White Haven, Luzerne County between the Mountain Top/ Hazleton Exit 262 and the White Haven/ Freeland Exit 273. Boy Scout Troops 379 will serve coffee on Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28, for 24 hours each day. The Mt. View Community Church will be available for coffee service on Sunday, June 29, and Monday, June 30, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. On the following weekend, Christ United Methodist Sunday School members will offer free coffee to travelers on Thursday, July 3, and Friday, July 4, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Christ United Methodist Bell Choir members will serve free coffee on Saturday, July 5, and Sunday, July 6, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

 INTERSTATE 81:

    •     Interstate 81 Northbound at Dorrance, Luzerne County between the Dorrance Exit 155 and the Nuangola Exit 159. Black Creek Alum Park will host the free coffee service on Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Hazleton Area Band will do the honors on Sunday, June 29, and Monday, June 30, from 8 a.m. to 1 pm. The Wyoming Valley West Ice Hockey team will host free coffee on July 5 and 6 for 24 hours each day.

    •    Interstate 81 Southbound at Nuangola, Luzerne County between the Nuangola Exit 159 and the Dorrance Exit 155. Members of Cub Scout Pack 379 will offer free coffee on June 27 and 28 for 24 hours each day, while the Cub Scout Pack 123 will be there on June 29 and 30 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. On the next weekend, Boy Scout Troop 106 will host the free coffee service on July 3 and 4 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the Cub Scout Pack 106 will do the honors on July 5 and 6 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

    •    Interstate 81 Northbound at Tompkinsville, Lackawanna County between the Fleetville/ Tompkinsville Exit 202 and the Glenwood/ Lenoxville Exit 206. Boy Scout Troop 16 will offer free coffee on June 27 and 28 for 24 hours each day, while Electric City S & R will be there on June 29 and 30 for 24 hours each day. On the following weekend, the Knights of Columbus will host free coffee on July 3 and 4 for 24 hours each day, while the UM Youth Group will be on hand to serve free coffee on July 5 and 6 for 24 hours each day.

 INTERSTATE 84:

    •    Interstate 84 Eastbound at Promised Lake, Pike County between the Greentown/ Lake Wallenpaupack Exit 20 and the Tafton/ Promised Land State Park Exit 26. Lake Region Youth Association will offer free coffee to travelers on July 3, 4, 5 and 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

INTERSTATE 81:

    •    Interstate 81 Southbound at Great Bend, Susquehanna County, between the New York State line and the Great Bend Exit 230. The Hallstead Great Bend Lions Club will serve free coffee on July 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 
Please take note: While times are listed, the hours of operation may vary among the organizations for a variety of reasons. For example, groups will leave when their supplies are exhausted.
