Entering his 39th year as the Varsity Head Coach for the Wallenpaupack Area Golf Team, Bob Simons hasn’t seen a team this young and inexperienced since back in the mid 80’s. The team lost five senior starters including Tyler Ferratti, Corey Capone, Dave Moore, Jordan Brown, and Schawn-Paul Rotella, leaving a big gap in this year’s line-up card that will be filled with up and coming players looking to make a splash in this year’s campaign on the links.

Entering his 39th year as the Varsity Head Coach for the Wallenpaupack Area Golf Team, Bob Simons hasn’t seen a team this young and inexperienced since back in the mid 80’s. “In the mid 80’s I had a team like this that was very young and inexperienced. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve had such a young team,” said Simons.

Though his 2009 duffers will be young, most of them have come up through the ranks of the Junior High program coached by Greg Kopich, and the Junior Varsity squad under the direction of Rick Anke. These two programs have both been very successful in preparing these student athletes for the next playing level.

“Relatively, we are going to be very, very young. It’s definitely a re-building year. We lost five senior starters, significant starters, so we are young, but they’re doing good and they’re working hard,” said Simons.

Brad Harsche, a junior, and Kane Kellogg, a sophomore, are expected to step into the Varsity role, with both seeing time last year on the course at this level.

“Brad Harsche has varsity experience and he will be a junior. Kane Kellogg was a freshman last year and he will be playing varsity as well. They’ve been working hard and they’ve had a good summer. I’m looking for those two guys to be part of our leaders,” added Simons.

Besides Harsche and Kellogg, Coach Simons does have a lot of talented options to choose from when pondering over the line-ups for any match. Seniors Mike Avissato and Gary VanOrden will most likely fill a slot along with a slew of other players. Amber VanOrden (sophomore), David Ralph (junior), Chris Cassel (junior), Max Trainor (junior), James Litzenberger (junior), John Larkin (senior), Kyle Jackson (freshman), Eric Miller (freshman), and Jen Curnal (senior) all will be vying for playing time, and gain that experience that they may be lacking this year in league play.

“Patience is a virtue and hopefully they will improve as the season goes on. That’s our goal. Our attitude is very good, they’re here with a winning attitude and they’re going to come along. I’m definitely excited, we’ll be all right,” said Simons.
