Eastern Pike Regional Police Department Assistant Chief, Eric Stewart reported that an unidentified man was found dead in the burned remains of a log cabin, early Tuesday morning.
The cabin, at 1260 Delaware Drive in Matamoras, was discovered to be on fire at 1 a.m.
According to Stewart who spoke with The News Eagle on Thursday, “police and fire were dispatched to the scene when a PennDOT employee who was plowing the local road during the evening snow storm saw the blaze.”
Immediately thereafter, police, EMS and fire departments were dispatched. Stewart said police were first on the scene. At that point, the house was fully engulfed in flames. After the flames burned down, Stewart said they recovered a body. Pennsylvania State Police were also on the scene.
The Pike County Coroner’s Office then took the body to Lehigh Valley Medical Center where as of press time, the apparent male body was still being examined to determine identity. Dental records were in the process of being examined and will be used to make a positive identification.
Police Chief Stewart said he was uncertain whether the male was the owner of the dwelling or may have been just staying at the residence when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is under investigation currently. When a postiive ID is made, a release will be made available by police, after attempts to locate next of kin.
