  • Since its opening on June 15, the Lake Region Fitness Center at the Hawley Silk Mill has already had great success, and the staff is looking forward to more success in the future.  Among their plans is to open a gym with a boxing ring, next door.
Dave Vazquez, manager, head trainer, and boxing coach, says they are doing very well.
“The amount of memberships we have already exceeds way beyond what we actually needed,” explains Vazquez. “It’s great, and we are still growing.”
Vazquez states that boxing, yoga, and spin classes are the most popular. The fitness center also offers activities in mixed martial arts, like sparing, wrestling, and kickboxing. The gym includes the standard bikes, weights, and treadmills as well.
Currently in the works for the fitness center is a new gym, which will be located in the warehouse just down the hill to the left of the Silk Mill. It will include wrestling, ropes for climbing, a boxing ring, heavy mats, solely. It will be used primarily for mixed martial arts equipment. Vazquez explains they are starting a fight club and he hopes it will be ready within a month to six weeks.
“I’m very happy with how everything is going,” says Vazquez. “The location really helps us.”
The fitness center is also trying to work with Lackawanna College on the third floor of the Silk Mill to implement the fitness center with the students’ curriculum. Vazquez and staff hope to see the numbers grow with the fitness center when students start classes.
Glenn Thomas is the fitness center’s key fighter. He is a Golden Globe Regional Champion and will make his professional debut in six months. This is very exciting for the fitness center.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of Lake Region Fitness only has to show up to register.
“We are adding more classes and we are already growing well,” says Vazquez.
