Raymond C. Schmitt, age 89, of Woodloch Springs, Hawley, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center, Honesdale. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Dorothy C. Becker.
Born May 27, 1923, in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Carl and Dorothy (Whitaker) Schmitt. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served as a Gunners Mate 3C on the USS South Dakota in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, where he earned 10 Bronze Stars. He also participated in the Philippines Liberation, where he earned 2 Bronze Stars. He and his ship were present in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the Peace Treaty.
Formerly of Glendale, Queens, NY, he was an engineer for NY Telephone, Bell Telephone and later Verizon prior to his retirement in 1985. He was a Telephone Pioneer member in New York.
He had been a resident of Woodloch Springs since 1990, he was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed golf, tennis, racquetball, bowling and woodworking.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law: Robert C. and JoAnne Schmitt of Putnam Valley, NY; and two grandchildren: Kristin and Kylie.
There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 9, at 1 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, Church Road, Rowland. Private cremation was held at Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.
