  • In two weeks, Paupack’s Ruth Casadevall will walk across the stage and pick up her diploma. Her academic and athletic careers will just be starting over.
She recently accepted an offer to play basketball for head coach Jackie Boswell at Stevenson University in Maryland.
“They are developing a great program at Stevenson,” said Casadevall. “I knew when I met the coaches and players that I wanted to be a part of this team and I am committed to working hard and being a member of a team that will hopefully be hanging at least one championship banner in the Stevenson University gymnasium before I graduate college.”
    From the Beginning
Ruth began playing basketball in fifth grade for the Wallenpaupack Biddy program and continued playing through middle school and onto the varsity scene where she was a co-captain the last two seasons under the direction of head coach Robin Scartelli.
This past season, Ruth scored 197 points, collected 138 rebounds, and dished out 64 assists. The Lady Bucks finished runner-up in the district and made their first appearance in the State tournament since 1988.
This past season Ruth also returned to her Biddy roots, this time as a coach and helped lead her team to the championship.
“I love this game and teaching these young girls on the fundamentals and importance of teamwork,” said Casadevall.
“Hopefully they will have the good fortune to be coached by all of the great coaches I have had throughout the years.”
When not playing for the Lady Bucks, Ruth was competing in AAU basketball. During the past three years, she was a member of the NEPA Flames national team that traveled to tournaments throughout the northeast under the direction of head coach Jeff Fedak.
She was also a member of The National Honor Society, S.A.D.D., a Peer Helper, in the Foreign Language Club, and a Student Facilitator.
    Academic Plans
When not in the gym or on the court, Ruth plans to study Biology as part of Stevenson’s pre-med program and major in cardiology, with a concentration in pediatric care.
    Preparing to Become a Mustang
Passing by the familiar courts at Scranton’s Riverfront Complex where she hooped it up for years, Ruth has begun an intense off-season  program under the direction of Strength and Conditioning trainer, Errol Mannick, as she prepares for her collegiate career.
She is the daughter of Mark and Elizabeth Casadevall. She has an older sister, Emely who is a junior at IUP. She has a has younger sister, Holly, who is a junior at WAHS.
