  • This Saturday, in the Wallenpaupack Area High School gymnasium, Lake Region Fitness and promoter David Vazquez will be presenting Boxing By The Lake.
The event kicks off at 7 pm and will feature several amateur bouts with local boxers in the ring.
“We’ll have about 18 fights, all three-round amateur fights with two minute rounds,” said Vazquez.
“If it is an open class fight it will be three-minute rounds.”
Some of the featured boxers will be Glen “Gingerbread Man” Thomas, Andrew Avissato, Taylor McLay, and Kevin “The Punisher” Gumble.
“These are USA Boxing sanctioned events, same as the Olympics and this can qualify you for the Olympics,” explained Vazquez.
Glen Thomas fights in the 201 open class and sports a record of 9-6 with one knockout on his resume.
“I’ve been boxing for about four years now and trained for a whole year before I actually started fighting,” said Thomas.
“My father always watched boxing and I started getting into it. Eventually I saw a gym that was opening up and I went there one day, tried it, and the guy’s wouldn’t let me stop training.
“After that, I can’t stop. I have the itch of the boxer.”
McLay, a Lakeville resident, will fight in the 165 pound weight class.
“It’s a great feeling and being able to hit someone without getting arrested is always fun,” joked McLay.
Avissato, a tenth grader a WAHS and Tafton local, is looking for his first win in the ring.
“I’m more of a counter-puncher, but I really enjoy training and staying healthy,” said Avissato.
“It’s a lot of fun, but I want to come away with a win in front of some home-town love.”

“We’re going to have DJ Skin E. Maxx, who is a very good DJ, there’s going to be a lot of good food and it’s a chance to support your local boxers,” said Vazquez.
