The Delaware Valley Opera (DVO) will present the opera “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” a comedy by Carl Otto Nicoli, the German composer at three locations. The opera is based on William Shakespeare’s comedy of the same name.
Wallenpaupack Area High School is one of the venues, Sunday, August 12th at 3 p.m.
The main character is the indomitable scoundrel and gold-digging philanderer Sir John Falstaff who is also the main character of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Part Two.” But this is a very different Falstaff, not the beer-belly, comic Falstaff but the merciless seducer of innocent females, preferable married ones.
Some of the main themes of the opera are that women can hold their own with men and that things are not as they seem.
The DVO Company has delighted audiences earlier this summer with performances of Verdi’s “Otello” and Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me Kate,” both based on Shakespeare’s plays.
The show opens on Friday, August 10th at the Tusten Theatre in Narrowsburg at 8 p.m. and continues through the weekend with performances on Saturday, August 11th at Sullivan West High School at 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 12th at Wallenpaupack High School at 3 p.m.
The final three performances will be held at Tusten Theatre on Friday and Saturday, August 17th and 18th at 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 19th at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors and $10 for students (at the box office the day of the show). Tickets are available at the box office the day of the performances or in advance by either calling DVO office at (845)252-3136 or on line at www.delawarevalleyopera.org.
