At the end of the 2011-2012 school year, many children at the Wallenpaupack North Primary School were provided an opportunity to "Erupt into Summer with Reading Fun".
They were asked to read at least ten books and keep a log of the titles of the books they read over the summer. The pictured students opted to participate in this challenge and were rewarded by participating in several volcano eruptions at the beginning of this school year. One volcanic eruption was caused by using water, liquid soap, red food coloring, baking soda and vinegar. The other volcanic eruption was caused by adding Mentos mints to diet soda.
"The students and teachers had great fun participating in these ‘experiments’ while learning about ‘chemical’ reactions at the same time. It’s so important to encourage and try and motivate children to continue reading, especially over the summer, to maintain the academic progress they have made throughout the school year," said school officials.
