National Park Service Superintendent John Donahue announced that US Route 209 and River Road will be closed for the Pocono Mountain Ironman event on Sunday, September 30. River Road will be closed prior to midnight on Saturday, September 29 until noon on Sunday, September 30.Gates will be closed at the Hialeah Picnic Area on the southern end of River Road and by Park Headquarters near the intersection of Hidden Lake Drive and River Road to the north. There will be no access to Smithfield Beach and Hialeah Picnic Area until the road reopens. US Route 209 will be closed on Sunday, September 30 at 6 a.m. from the intersection of Rt. 739 - US Route 209 to the southern border of the park at the NPS Contact Station.The road is expected to reopen at approximately noon.The Pocono Mountain Ironman event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run.The swimming portion of the event will take place outside of the park at Tamiment Lake off of Bushkill Falls Road; participants will then transition to the bicycling leg.They will ride down Bushkill Falls Road and then proceed north on US Route 209 to Chestnut Ridge Road.
