Part-time emergency responder training assistant positions were approved and filled by the Pike County Commissioners, Oct. 17th. The training takes place at the new Pike County Training Center in Lords Valley, with houses 9-1-1 communications, Emergency Management offices and facilities to train firefighters and other responders. The Center was opened with a dedication ceremony in June 2012. Chairman Richard Caridi explained that they realized that volunteer trainers could not be covered under the County’s Workers’ Compensation insurance. The Commissioners agreed to create five part-time Training Assistant positions for less than 1,000 hours per year at $10 an hour, without benefits. The positions are effective Nov. 5th. The pay rate was set at the minimum level the county authorizes for starter positions. Hours will be regulated by the Facility Director rather than the number of personnel. In a second motion, the Commissioners approved hiring for these new positions, Robert Beltramine, Jon Castimore, Scott Gillette II, Timothy Knapp and Eric Jakubowski. Also discussed: • The County will seek bids for an outside elevator lift for an Area Agency on Aging client. Bids are required when the cost is over $18,500. Aging Waiver funds pays for this service offered to eligible Pike County residents. • There were no takers for the 13 recycling containers, left over from the County Recycling Program which ended Oct. 1st. Bids were sought to find a purchaser. Caridi said they would be happy to give them away to anyone interested. • A new full time 9-1-1 dispatcher position was created for the Communications Center, for 40 hours a week at $10 an hour with benefits after 90 days. Christine Donahue was hired to fill the position. • Pike County Public Library has returned to a nine-member board, from seven members, due to increased duties. James Burnett was approved by the Commissioners as the ninth member. The Commissioners approve four and the Library Board approves four; the Community House, where the Library is presently housed, appoints one. • Wayco Inc. was awarded the bid for Airport Park paving, at a cost of $39,112. • Jersey One Auto Sales was the successful bidder, to purchase the 1999 International Recycling truck, as well as the 2005 Ford dump truck and 2001 Jeep Cherokee. • An audience member asked the Commissioners how to respond to criticism that the Pike Outdoors brochure published by the County was a waste of money and time. Caridi replied that the money was not a waste; it came from a grant and was approved by the board. “We want to negate misconceptions about polluted water in Pike,” Caridi said. “We heard complaints that some tourists think our water is polluted by [natural gas industry] fracking.” He said the rumor was spread by a comedian on a late night national TV show. Pike County Commissioners meet on the first and third Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Administration Building on Broad Street.
