Donal S. Coutts recently resigned his position of Director of the Wallenpaupack Historical Society, a position that he has held for many years. He wishes to have time to work on other things connected with his position as Palmyra Township Historian.
He has served as Historian since 1989 and he was the driving force behind the formation of the Palmyra, Pike, Wallenpaupack Historical Society. He was one of the incorporators when in 1998 the Society was incorporated. He served as its first president from 1998 to 2002. The name has since been changed to the Wallenpaupack Historical Society and has grown to have a membership numbering over 200.
Years before incorporating, Don and his wife, Shirley, invited long-time residents of the township to their home to talk about the "old times" and to share memorabilia that they treasured. As this group grew larger, it moved to the Palmyra Township Municipal building. People began to give Donal items from their families to save for the next generation. Don collected quite a large amount of things and stored them in his basement and garage. From this nucleus grew the concept of organizing and becoming a 501 (3) c non-profit organization.
Don’s life-long love of history and his love of community motivated him to collect photographs and articles, talk with the older generation about the life they knew, and to eventually put it into printed words. He has authored a two-volume history of the Paupack United Methodist Church, a History of Palmyra Township, several brochures, and numerous columns for The News Eagle. He is the one you go to first for information.
His practical, direct approach to problems and his wealth of experiences have made him an important advisor and counsel for the Society. At a luncheon in his honor held recently, Don was presented with a certificate naming him a Director Emeritus to the Board of Directors. He continues as an ex-officio member of the Board as Township Historian. The WHS thanks him for his years of service and his counsel. Donal Coutts epitomizes the mission of WHS which is "to keep the history of the Wallenpaupack area alive and accessible to present and future generations.
