At Thanksgiving our thoughts turn to thankfulness. I normally keep a running list of what I’m thankful for because it encourages me when circumstances try to drag me down.
I am thankful that I can see, hear, speak, touch, taste, walk, and have a body that still works pretty well. I am thankful that I don’t have to live in constant pain or with crippling disabilities.
I am thankful for electricity, running water, a warm home, a comfortable bed and abundance of food. I’m thankful for the comforts of life that we take for granted but many around the world do without. I am also thankful for the beauty of nature that surrounds us.
I am thankful for my family and friends. I am surrounded by many who love me, and they bring joy into my life. I am thankful I don’t have to be lonely or spend my holidays alone.
I am thankful we live in a Christian nation where I can worship the Lord, read my Bible and attend church without fear of persecution, imprisonment or death.
I am thankful for my Father in heaven who sent His only Son Jesus to die for me (I John 4:9-10). I am thankful for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who went willingly to the cross to die for the forgiveness of my sins and to give me eternal life (John 3:16). I am thankful for the Holy Spirit who comforts me, convicts of sin, and leads, directs, guides and teaches me (John 14:26).
I am thankful for the Lord’s great love that He pours out upon me (I John 3:1). I am thankful that the Lord is good and His love endures forever (Psalm 106:1). I am thankful for His presence that is ever with me (Psalm 21:6), and that He has promised He will never leave me or forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:6).
I am thankful for God’s perfect love that casts out all fear (I John 4:18). I need not fear the future for the Lord will take care of me whatever comes my way (Psalm 34:4 & 6). I am thankful that God is completely faithful and reliable (Lamentations 3:22-23) and that He provides my every need (Philippians 4:19).
I am thankful the Lord bestows upon me His peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:6-7), overflowing joy (I Peter 1:8, Psalm 4:7), and an ever-increasing hope (Psalm 62:5, Hebrews 6:19).
I am thankful for the strength the Lord provides me each day (Isaiah 40:31, 41:10).
I am thankful for a daily fresh supply of mercy and grace (II Corinthians 12:9, Hebrews 4:16).
I could go on to name 1,000 more things I am thankful for. May this encourage you to make your own thankful list. As we list those things we’re thankful for, our joy and hope in the Lord are renewed.
