Recently, four Wallenpaupack students participated in a unique job-shadowing opportunity at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
As part of the school district’s career initiative, Mrs. Colleen Edwards, Wallenpaupack’s Career Coordinator, and Wayne Memorial Hospital arranged for juniors Kevin Brown and Liam Cunningham to observe as neurosurgeon Dr. Philip Hlavac performed spinal surgery to correct disc one and two decompressions.
Kevin and Liam were able to watch as the surgical team intubated the patient, used a special microscope to view the spinal procedure, and closure. Surgical technician, Shawn Duffy oriented the students to the policies, operating room procedures, and the teams’ roles and responsibilities.
Seniors Kaelyn Ragonese and Alexis Rosengrant observed a hernia surgery with Dr. Brian Lenczewski. The operating room staff arranged for the seniors to learn about pre-op and recovery procedures.
All four have declared their intentions to enter the medical field. The students commented that this was an incredible opportunity that only served to confirm their post-secondary intentions. Mrs. Edwards and the students thanked Wayne Memorial for permitting them to observe and especially expressed their gratitude to the physicians and their staffs for their willingness to encourage them to enter the medical field.
