Volunteers are needed to help with an after-school program being started at the Wallenpaupack North Intermediate School and Middle School. The program, called the Rowland Youth Club, is being conducted privately by Mrs. Dorean Davis with permission of school officials to use the school facilities.
She stated that since an announcement was run last October, she has found a volunteer to help students with their homework. She is still looking for individuals to give of their time to teach dance, music and art.
Sewing instruction is also proposed.
The program is entirely free to students and will be offered twice a week, at the North Intermediate School on Tuesday from 2:39 to 5:30 p.m. and at the Middle School on Thursday from 2:40 to 5:30 p.m. They have been able to start the program, and have a few children involved. Parents are invited to contact her for information and to fill out a required application.
She has also been given permission to use the Lackawaxen Fire House for a similar program, on other days. Once school bus transportation can be worked out, she hopes to begin the program in Lackawaxen as well.
In addition, she is a 4-H leader and would like to begin a 4-H program at Wallenpaupack.
Davis said this the after-school program is important, to help our children. Some will go home to an empty home because parents are working. The after school club will allow additional educational opportunities and a means to encourage the youth to not get into trouble, she stated. "Rowland" refers to Rowland, North Carolina, where she used to coordinate a similar program.
The Lackawaxen Township resident said she eventually would like to have her own facility and expand on available after-school programs. With adequate assistance, she said she would to expand to the high school, and have speakers tall about such issues as drugs and alcohol and teenage pregnancies. Classes will be conducted by qualified individuals and with parental consent. Field trips are another possibility, in the future.
