Paupack's all-star senior center tallied the 1,000th point of her varsity hoops career

HAWLEY — On a cold winter night before an SRO crowd at Wallenpaupack Area, Alexix Roman etched her name in the local record books with another dazzling hoops performance.

The senior center posted video game numbers in leading Paupack to a Lackawanna League win over archrival Honesdale.

With this 51-35 victory, the Lady Bucks claimed sole possession of first place in Division Two and dealt the Hornets their first loss of the season.

Milestone Moment

While a huge regular season win was uppermost in the minds of players and coaches, many fans turned out in hopes of witnessing an historic moment.

And, they were not disappointed.

With 6:07 remaining in the second quarter and the game still far from decided, Roman grabbed an offensive rebound. She took a deep breath, dribbled once and powered up for two.

Despite fierce resistance from the likes of Natasha Hessling and Mary Martin, Roman managed to muscle her shot home. Instantly, the crowd erupted and pandemonium ensued.

The buzzer sounded as officials halted the game and ran for cover, smiles on their faces. Roman had just scored the 1,000th point of her varsity career.

Teammates, coaches and family members swarmed Roman at midcourt.

"It's really amazing and I'm so thankful, but I'm glad it's over too," Alexix said of her magical moment. "I really just wanted to get it over with so we could focus on winning the game."

Which Paupack then proceeded to do, much to the delight of the hometown fans.

Roman went on to enjoy a monster night against the Lady Hornets. The wildly-talented center rattled the rims for 26 points and 14 rebounds. She also drained 10-of-13 free throw tries.

"I just wanted to do whatever I could to help us win the game," Roman said. "Honesdale is our biggest rival and they'd already beaten us once. There was definitely a little bit of a revenge factor there."

By the Numbers

Paupack built a big early lead in his one and was never seriously threatened.

The Lady Bucks opened the game on a 9-2 run, which forced Coach Tracy Ludwig to call time midway through the first period.

By halftime, Paupack's advantage had grown to double digits as it became increasingly clear that the night belonged to Roman.

Alexix dominated the low post, despite an Herculean effort by Hessling. The Lady Hornets' sophomore center turned in a career best performance of her own, battling her way to 19 points and 12 boards.

Honesdale did manage to cut Paupack's lead to single digits on two occasions, but Roman had an answer each time. Whether cleaning the glass on defense or defeating double teams on offense, Alexix presented the visitors with nightmare match-up problems.

"I was so fired up for this game," she said with a laugh. "Honesdale beat us on their home floor and now we took it to them on our home floor. I can't wait for the next time..."

Onward & Upward

Danielle Palazzi and Nicki Mann contributed key plays to Paupack's cause.

Palazzi drilled several clutch jumpers and finished with eight points, while Mann attacked the basket all night long en route to seven.

Roman proved to be the difference, though, utterly dominating the paint when Hessling was forced to leave the game for a time with a bloody lip.

Alexix is the daughter of Kenneth & Veronique Roman, Hemlock Farms.

She's hoping to continue her basketball career at the collegiate level as a nursing major. Early suitors for her services include West Chester, East Stroudsburg and the University of Scranton.
