Safe Haven of Pike County zipped up its leathers and strapped on its helmet the weekend of Jan. 5-6 when it met with the family-oriented Pocono Motorcycle Club, "Sinners & Saints." However, this meeting was not about biking; rather, it was all about sharing, support, and generosity.
At their November meeting, Club President Ed "Cowboy" Klingener challenged all club members to gather toiletries, clothing, toys, non-perishable foods, and other necessities, for a major donation to Safe Haven. According to Club Secretary JoAnne "JoJo" Klingener, the results far exceeded anyone’s expectations.
The donation drive seemed to take off immediately. One club member, Dave "Ghost" Rhoda, arranged for a drop box to be available at his workplace, as well as for Jojo to be interviewed on WSBG (98.7fm) radio to advertise the challenge to listeners. Club member Bob "ZZ" Seminuk and his wife Terri invited their son’s Cub Scout Troop- Pack #229, to get involved, and as expected, the Scouts rose to the occasion with very generous donations. As Jojo explained to Safe Haven’s Executive Director, Dave Bever, "It took on a life of its own; it was amazing how all of the members got involved and ran with it!"
The major donation was brought to the Safe Haven offices on January 6th with the hopes that the new year would begin on a positive note. "Being that we are a family-oriented club that helps and supports its members," said Jojo, "we felt it was fitting to help other families in difficult situations; we were well rewarded, this was an amazing experience for all involved!"
Dave Bever agreed wholeheartedly and added, "This is the kind of community response that reminds everyone that domestic and sexual violence victims and survivors are not ‘cases,’ but families and individuals with day-to-day needs."
Sinners & Saints’ members involved with this event were: Ed "Cowboy" Klingener, President, Joe "Stones" Insinga, Vice-President, JoAnne "Jojo" Klingener, Secretary, Paige "Lizzie" Rhoda, Treasurer, Rich "Who" Snyder, Road Captain, Mike "Kraut" Cruver, Chris "Elvis" Sommers, Pete "Gascan" Mancuso, Tom "Tommy Guns" Cassidy, Bob "Mack" McRath, Kai Seminuk, Bob "ZZ" Seminuk, Bob "Lowkey" Ochsen, Dave "Ghost" Rhoda, and junior member Savannah "Savi" House.
In the last fiscal year alone, Safe Haven of Pike County, Inc. provided over 1500 hours of crisis intervention and supportive counseling to 735 survivors of domestic and sexual violence, including over 100 children. During that time, they offered safe shelter to 68 women and children in flight from dangerous and abusive circumstances.
