Despite this loss, Paupack remains atop the Lackawanna League's Division Two standings
On Monday night, West Scranton landed on the shores of the Big Lake to take on the Lady Bucks in a Division I-II crossover contest.
Setting the Stage
Paupack's JV squad opened the evening with a 35-19 win, which included a 15-point contribution by freshman Molly Jansco.
Early action in the varsity bout saw both sides travel the court back-and-forth several times, taking shots, but neither finding the hoop nor gaining a clear advantage.
Alexix Roman finally found the basket for the Lady Bucks with an inside shot. Bridgette Mann boosted the tally by netting a trey shortly thereafter.
Roman added another two as the game started to pick up some speed. A foul on Roman sent Marissa Pazzaglia to the line where she netted two good throws and a deuce by Jane Joyce
Pazzaglia opened up the second quarter with a basket for West, but Danielle Palazzi fired right back with a bucket of her own.
Roman encountered foul trouble and headed to the bench, but Irene Dispenza and Molly Jansco attempted to help the Buckhorn cause.
However, without its star center, the Paupack offense was crippled and the defense was shaken.
This allowed West Scranton to go on an 11-0 run before Kaelyn Ragonese finally drained a field goal for Paupack.
Pazzaglia would make another successful set of free throws and Joyce would add another bucket before the half was done and the Lady Bucks found themselves down 21-13.
Joyce hit for two to kick off the second half, but Roman retaliated with a deuce to keep Paupack going.
Another bucket from Joyce helped West drive up the score, but the Lady Bucks came back strong.
Nicki Mann went coast-to-coast for a lay-up and Roman went to the line, hitting her first, but when she missed her second shot, was fouled again on the rebound attempt.
Gaining two more freebies, she netted one and then made another bucket off a pass from Palazzi.
The Paupack run continued with another 1-for-2 trip by Roman and a 3-pointer delivered up by Bridgette Mann tied the score at 25-all.
Joyce dropped in another deuce for the Lady Invaders, but Ragonese nailed a jumper at the close of the period, tying it up 27-27.
Pazzaglia made two free throws for West to start the fourth quarter.
Bridgette Mann hit her third trey of the night to temporarily take the lead back for Paupack, but Joyce would hit for three, and then two.
Roman struck for another Paupack basket, but Joyce would do more damage to the Lady Bucks by swishing two free throws.
A good free throw each from Roman and Bridgette Mann helped the Paupack cause and Paige Hiller hit for two to tie the game up again 36-all with just 57 seconds left.
A foul gave Coyne two free throws allowing West to take the lead, but a bucket from Bridgette Mann tied it up again.
With seconds left, Joyce dropped in to for the Invaders to take the lead but before the Lady Bucks could get something set up, time expired with the score 40-38 in favor of West Scranton.
"We played three good quarters," explained Coach Adam Holtzer.
"We just made a lot of mental mistakes in the second quarter and lost the lead. We ended up trying to play catch-up the rest of the night.
"We knew Joyce would be tough to defend against. She drives hard and is an excellent shooter."
Dwelling on the loss isn't in the credo of Holtzer or his team.
"Practice will be tough tomorrow but well come back," he said. "We've come back from losses before and getting knocked down sometimes makes you stronger."
