The monthly speaker for the Wallenpaupack Historical Society for February is Peter Becker, managing editor of The News Eagle and author of the weekly Local History series.

The talk is scheduled Wenesday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m., at the PPL Wallenpapack Environmental Learning Center.

Becker started the Local History series in July of 2010, and it has run every Wednesday in The News Eagle for the past two and a half years. The series has focused on the history of Hawley but also branches out to the Lake Wallenpaupack region and surrounding area, such as Lackawaxen Township.

Through extensive research, including interviews with senior citizens, combing old newspapers and books, much information has been brought out on the heritage of this small town and its citizens. Hawley has been shown as a prime example of Americana and values that are all too fleeting with sweeping changes in modern culture.

As Becker will mention, input from the community has helped keep the series going. Anyone wishing to share their memories of "how it was", as well as old photos, is welcome to contact him at The News Eagle.

A goal of the series is the preservation of an understanding of our roots to add to our conversation of who we are, where we came from and where we as a local society wish to go as time marches on.

The Historical Society welcomes the public to this and other meetings that they schedule. A business meeting and refreshments follow.
