One day, years ago, I wandered off a familiar path in the woods and was hopelessly lost. I had no idea where I was or how to get out. After a panicky moment, I finally decided to just start walking in one direction.
I was following a power line, so I figured I would eventually find civilization. I did finally come out by an unfamiliar house. Fortunately there was someone home and they were gracious enough to drive me home since I was on the other side of the mountain.
Not knowing the way to go when you are lost can be a frightening experience. But there is more than one way to be lost. We can also be lost in life, not knowing what direction to follow. There are so many choices that many times we agonize over which is the right way for us.
But there is One who knows the best way for us. God has created us for a specific purpose and He knows how to get us there. He tells us in Psalm 32:8, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you."
If only we would learn to seek God first for that best way. We sometimes are lost for years in a life that wasn’t right for us until we finally listen to God’s counsel and find the right way.
"I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river" (Isaiah 48:17-18).
We do have the assurance that even if we wander off the right path, God is faithful to direct us back to His way for us. "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’" (Isaiah 30:21).
We can be physically lost or lost in the direction of our life, but worst by far is to be spiritually lost and headed for eternal damnation. There are many who believe that all paths lead to God and it doesn’t matter which way they go.
Proverbs 14:42 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." The Bible tells us there is only one right way leading to God. "Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’" (John 14:6).
