Pike County District Attorney Raymond Tonkin announced that a Greentown man responsible for the death of a 22 year old Hawley woman was sentenced in Pike County Court on Thursday, Feb. 21.

President Judge Joseph F. Kameen sentenced Cody Saprona, age 24, to the Pike County Correctional Facility for 11 to 23 ˝ months followed by an additional 3 years of probation. Saprona was ordered to pay a fine of $2,683.00 and had his driver’s license suspended for 3 ˝ years after entering a guilty plea to Homicide by Vehicle, Involuntary Manslaughter, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and numerous motor vehicle code violations.

On August 12, 2011, on Roemerville Road, in Greene Township, Saprona lost control of his vehicle which unintentionally caused the death of his 22 year old passenger, Sarah J. Savadel. The Pennsylvania State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit conducted an investigation of the collision. The investigation revealed Saprona’s vehicle, a1999 Kia Sportage, was traveling at approximately 72 miles per hour in a posted 40 miles per hour zone. Saprona’s vehicle stuck an embankment, began to roll and then landed on its roof, on a large boulder. Ms. Savadel was deceased at the scene.

District Attorney Raymond Tonkin said "These type of cases are tough to bring a full measure of justice to a heartbroken family. The community lost a good person who had a bright future. Hopefully this sentence will deter others from driving at excessive speeds."

Saprona received minor injuries in the crash, State Police at Blooming Grove reported.
