Risk of heart disease

Nadine Greco MS, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Wayne Memorial Hospital was a guest speaker at each of the Wayne County senior centers during the month of February.

She spoke with the seniors about accessing their risk for Heart Disease with an interactive discussion. Nadine started out by saying that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in this country.

She then discussed the risk factors: Smoking and how it can lead to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke; Hypertension and how to treat it besides their medication (exercise, low-salt diet, lose weight, reduce their stress); High Cholesterol and what food contain cholesterol and what a heart healthy diet includes( fruits and veggies, whole grains, less animal protein and more protein from eggs, beans and peanut butter), Diabetes; and the importance of keeping your blood sugars under control, Overweight/Obesity; and how it stresses the heart and can lead to diabetes and joint problems, Stress; and how we respond to it.

Is it a healthy response like going for a walk or an unhealthy response like overeating or smoking more and finally lack of Exercise. The more risk factors a person has, the greater the risk for heart disease.
