To the Editor:
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month across the nation. In Wayne County, we grieve the 19 reports of substantiated child abuse in 2012. The vast majority of these reports were sexual abuse.
Most would agree, that sexual abuse ranks with some of society's most heinous crimes, yet it is also one of the most difficult crimes to prosecute. But here, in Wayne County, we are working to improve that through the Wayne County Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).
The MDT is a group of professionals who investigate child abuse (District Attorney's office, State & Local Police, Children & Youth Services) as well as those who provide services to victims (Victim Advocates, Mental Health Counselors, Medical personnel). Each month, a group of about 20 representatives get together for networking, training, and brainstorming difficult cases. The MDT members want to ensure we are doing the best, most thorough investigations in order to benefit child abuse victims, their families, as well as those who may be falsely accused.
Due to sexual abuse tragedies like the Jerry Sandusky crimes, society has been challenged to get involved and report suspected abuse. Your local investigators want to ensure that each report is met with expertise, thoroughness, and timeliness. The MDT is helping to accomplish this.
