DREHER TWP. - Pa. State Police Honesdale barracks report that a man accused of robbing the PNC Bank in Newfoundland, Saturday morning, April 20, was caught soon after on Interstate 84.
The suspect, Dennis J. McGuire, age 45 from Clifton, Pa., is accused of taking more than $5,000 from the bank.
At approximately 9:50 a.m. the defendant arrived at PNC Bank at 976 Main Street. He entered the bank and walked to a male teller that was behind the counter. The defendant allegedly demanded money from the teller and produced a plastic shopping-type bag.
The teller began to put money in the bag. The defendant became agitated and ordered the teller to hurry up. The defendant then took the $5,534 in cash and fled the bank, said Trooper John Decker.
As the robber was fleeing the bank the teller and other employees watched him out the window and saw the defendant run to neighboring parking lot and get into a dark colored mini-van with the driver's side rear blinker lend broken with tape on it. It also had a loud exhaust. The bank employees were able to get a partial license plate number - it was a Pennsylvania plate- as the defendant drove off.
The defendant fled south on SR 447, witnesses told State Police.
A corporal of the Pa. State Police Dunmore was in his marked patrol car on I-38- near I-84 when he saw a vehicle that appeared very similar in description to that of the robbery suspect. When the corporal got closer to the vehicle he could see it matched the details given by the witnesses. He subsequently stopped the vehicle, and saw that the driver matched the description given of the bank robber.
A photo was sent back to the bank and the teller positively identified the actor, said Trooper Decker. Money said to be from the bank was found in the pockets of the actor.
McGuire was arrested and arraigned. He was lodged in Wayne County Prison in lieu of posting $500,000 bail.
