  • On Saturday, May 18 starting at noon, the Greater Lake Region will sponsor the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, with opening ceremonies starting at the Wallenpaupack High School.
The Relay is an activity that honors cancer survivors, anyone ever diagnosed with cancer and those who passed away because of the disease.
Money raised during the relay, will support research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Proceeds from the American Cancer Society’s Relay, funds more than $130 million cancer research every year.
The Relay for Life of the Great Lake Region will have over 25 teams and over 195 participants. Thus far, participants have raised $20,980, as they work to pass last year's $60,000 that was raised by the end of August.
There will be a caregivers and survivors dinner, Saturday at 6 p.m. where cancer survivors and caregivers will enjoy a free meal.
Anyone is welcome to attend, and may walk around the track as well, whether in honor of a cancer victim or survivor, or to support the efforts of the American Cancer Society.
Hawley Mayor, David Hawk, has proclaimed May 2013 as "Relay for Life of the Greater Lake Region month." The event continues around the clock and will conclude Sunday morning, May 19.
