When you hear the word sunscreen, what do you think of? Do you think of a guy at the beach walking around with a white nose? Well that guy, that at one time or another we have laughed at, has the right idea. Sun protection is a very important part of your life. Whether it is while you are outside exercising or washing your car.
Everyone needs sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend that you use a broad spectrum sunscreen. Broad spectrum means that it will protect against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and are the major culprit for skin aging. UVB rays cause reddening of the skin, sun burn and are the major players in causing skin cancer.
So how do you protect yourself from the sun? The most important thing is to always wear sunscreen. It is important to wear a sunscreen with a SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30. It is also important to put lip balm on that as SPF in it to protect your lips. If you have sensitive skin there is sunscreen out there for you. It is important to re-apply your sunscreen about every two hours. You may need it more often if you are sweating or swimming. Even on cloudy days it is important that you put on sunscreen. The rays from the sun are just as powerful on cloudy days.
Another good thing to remember is that the sun’s rays are the strongest during the times of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are outside during that time frame, seek shade. If it is not possible for you to do so, apply some extra sunscreen. Use extra protection when you are around snow, water, and sand as the rays from the sun reflect off of these and can cause sun burn. A good rule of thumb is; if your shadow is shorter than you, seek shade. So, while you are out enjoying the beautiful weather, remember to protect your skin. It will make it for a much more enjoyable experience.
