LAKE REGION- In an effort to learn more about our unique area, a group of about 20 local residents will spend an entire day exploring beautiful Wayne and Pike counties and enhancing their knowledge (or even learning for the first time) about some of its well-known tourist attractions.
The first Wayne/Pike Ambassador Program class takes place on Thursday, May 30th. Funded and supported by The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau (PMVB) and PPL, the idea for a program of this nature in these two counties was borrowed from a similar program in Lackawanna County, which met with extreme positive results.
Ambassadors for Wayne and Pike counties are vital in promoting this scenic region and teaching other people and visitors about it. "The purpose and primary goal of this important program is to educate others about the history, heritage and attractions in Wayne and Pike counties," said Keith Williams, who manages the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center and helped spearhead the program.
This exciting class kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center. The future Ambassadors will board a bus that will take them from the Visitors Center to interesting and educational places like the Dorflinger Glass Museum, the Wayne County Historical Society Museum, Grey Towers, the Columns Museum and the Zane Grey Museum. Tom Kennedy, class Escort, local historian and educator, will provide historical facts about each of the places along the way. The group breaks for a delicious lunch at Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Resort and some surprises along the way will make for an entertaining afternoon. The bus returns to the Center at 5:30 p.m.
In addition to its educational elements, just as importantly, this class will be fun and participants will hopefully walk away with a wealth of knowledge and a greater appreciation for the area they call home—the breathtaking Pocono Mountains.
Program organizers plan on holding one or two classes in the fall. For more information you may contact Keith Williams at (570) 226-2141
