Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Superintendent John J. Donahue announced that River Road in Middle Smithfield Township will be closed from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 18th through 20th for annual road maintenance. It will re-open each afternoon at 4.

Work will consist of pavement patching, hazardous tree removal, and shoulder mowing and will begin at the south end of the road near Hialeah Picnic Area and progress northward toward Park Headquarters as it is completed. Smithfield Beach will not be accessible by vehicle until after 4 p.m. on June 18, but it will be open on June 19 and 20 while maintenance work continues farther north along the roadway.

Access to the McDade Trail from trailheads along River Road will be limited while work is completed. Hikers and cyclists may access the trail at Hialeah Picnic Area or Park Headquarters during this time. "Doing this type of preventative maintenance makes the road safer for everyone that uses it and safety is a top priority for the National Park Service," stated Superintendent Donahue.
