A large black bear was seen crossing Spruce Street, Hawley, early Saturday evening.
Eugene Krause, Hawley Deputy Fire Chief, said they spotted the bruin while the fire company was attending a traffic accident in front of The Settler's Inn, around 6:45 p.m. He said the bear was crossing between Prospect and Highland streets.

In July 1986 a black bear was seen passing through downtown Hawley, walking on the sidewalk on Main Avenue, in broad daylight.
