  • Rounding out the Lake Region's summer season every year is the GDS Fair, held on the fairgrounds in Newfoundland.
The 96th GDS (Greene-Dreher-Sterling) Fair takes place Tuesday, August 27 through Monday Labor Day, September 2. A big variety of contests, from pie eating to babies punctuate the busy schedule, with live music performers, "Monster Trucks", over 5,000 agricultural exhibits, amusement rides and games, the Demolition Derby and lots more.
Andy Weist, who has Fair President for over a dozen years, affirmed that a special attraction of the GDS Fair is its size. Known as small, country fair, he said there is more of a relaxed feel. The week, however, is full of things to do and enjoy.
KSR Motorsports presents "Monster Trucks" with "Bigfoot" is the headline event, set for Tuesday, opening night, at 7:30 p.m. There is a $10 extra charge for this grandstand event. He said it's been several years since they had this attraction.
They also have two Demolition Derbies this year. This is always a big draw.
On the fairgrounds on Friday through Monday, Jerry Brown is back with his pal, Django the Monkey. New this year, on Sunday and Monday you can enjoy a "one man band," Marc Dobson, who operates seven different instruments with his feet. "He's very, very good," said Weist.
The Fair Queen Pageant is on Tuesday night at 5:30. This year there are two contestants.
Then there's the famous Outhouse Races in the Arena, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. This unique and hilarious act was last held back in the 1980's. A team of five bring their own decorated outhouse; four push it on wheels while one sits inside.
There's still time to register for the many contests. Read all about them on their website.
Through the decades, the fair has kept to its roots. They are still very much agricultural, with a good assortment of exhibits.
There also are a lot more vendors this year.
GDS Fairgrounds are located next to and behind the Wallenpaupack South Elementary School, off Route 191/507, Main Street in Newfoundland. Free parking is available in Carlton Drake Memorial Park across the street, where a free shuttle picks up fair-goers.
The pay-one-price is $5.00 for the first three days, Tuesday through Thursday; the price is $8.00 for Friday through Monday. Your ticket brings all rides and most shows, other than special events. A $25 seasonal pass is also available.
On Thursday, senior citizens enjoy a discounted rate of $3.00, until 4 p.m.
Weist said that they have a good team of volunteers who make the fair happen year after year. Some have followed the footsteps of multiple generations, helping at the GDS Fair. Others are relative newcomers. Weist said that they always welcome new volunteers, who bring both fresh ideas and energy.
