  •   Graffiti on the 9/11 memorial sparked disgust at the Hawley Borough Council meeting, Wednesday night, September 11.
Susan Baldwin, who was instrumental in seeing the memorial in Bingham Park established two years ago and served on the committee, brought the defacing mark to Council's attention. That very day the committee hosted a prayer service at noon time at the site, when the small scribbling was noticed.
Council member Elaine Herzog speculated if the offender was the same who left graffiti recently at the dugout in the park. Baldwin noted it was not known how long ago the memorial was scribbled upon. The marking wasn't very legible.
Police Chief Daniel Drake asked The News Eagle to invite anyone who has any information about the vandalism to contact Hawley Borough Police at 226-4868.
Also regarding the 9/11memorial, Baldwin received approval from Council to put up a flagpole nearby. While permission is needed from the Borough Parks & Recreation Commission, Herzog noted that the only obstacle mentioned previously was the need to have the flag lighted. Baldwin said that a solar-powered light is planned for the pole.
Donations will be necessary for the flagpole. Lu Seagraves, director at the Hawley Senior Center, had asked for a letter from Council to show to potential donors. If needed, Baldwin and fellow committee member Robert Essex were willing to conduct fund-raising.
