On Friday, Oct. 11, the Wallenpaupack Area School District will be conducting Active Shooter Drills in their school buildings in conjunction with the PA State Police and the recently formed Wallenpaupack Area Police Department.
Joann Hudak, Assistant Superintendent, said that students will not be participating in the drills. The drills were planned for an in-service day for staff, when students are not at school.
The exercise is designed to validate and improve the School District's response to a crisis situation, Hudak stated. Law enforcement, emergency responders and school officials will simulate armed intruder(s) at each school building during the day. Although they are drills, the response will be as authentic as possible.
Area residents may notice increased presence of law enforcement and emergency response vehicles in addition to hearing alarms, simulated gunshots or other loud noises. "Therefore, we want to make sure all area residents are aware of the exercise in advance," Hudak stated. "We ask for your patience if these exercises disrupt your daily routine."
Hudak expressed thanks to area residents in support of what she described as an important exercise. She invited anyone with questions to contact her at 570-226-4557, ext. 3000 or via email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
