  •    An inspection of the Hawley Area Authority wastewater lines was commencing the week of October 14, Councilman John Roberston, Council liaison to the Authority, reported. the project, costing $21,400, will provide information about the sewer lines and any needed repairs.
Entech Engineering recommended the inspection, which will be carried out by Utility Service Group. Back flushing will take two to three days.
Entech's analysis of the wastewater treatment plant and pump stations were accepted by the Authority board. Entech suggested upgrades to extend equipment life, ensure compliance with permits and provide the most cost effective operations.
Robertson also related at the Oct. 9th Council meeting that sewer rates will be going up. Sewer system customers were to receive notice the week of October 14 of sewer rate increases effective in January 2014.
Residents are asked to cooperate in not flushing down "bathroom wipes." A problem affecting sewer plant operators nationwide, some of the pre-moistened towelettes do not break down as they travel through the system. The result is that pipes and sewer system pumps are becoming clogged. Hawley Plant Manager Frank Schweisinger reported that this has become an issue here. Recently, two 55-gallon barrels of debris were removed from the Columbus and Welwood pumping stations by plant personnel.
As of September 26, sewer system delinquent accounts totaled $55,555.50. This was down from $59,758.23 on August 29. Four water termination letters have been sent to delinquent customers.
The Hawley Area Authority's next board meeting is set for Wednesday, October 30 at 6:45 p.m. at the  plant offices off of Hudson Street. The following two meeting dates were adjusted due to the holidays: Thursday, November 21 at 6:45 p.m. and Thursday. December 19 at 4 p.m.
These meetings are open to the public.
