  •     As part of Wallenpaupack Area School District’s efforts to aid in career preparation and opportunities, four juniors who are considering medical careers participated in the annual Healthcare Career Day at Wayne Memorial Hospital on Oct 22.
Wayne Memorial’s Volunteer Coordinator Joyce Malicky said the, “hospital is committed to creating a healthier community” and as part of that, the hospital collaborates with regional school districts, to provide educational opportunities.
Recently, Amanda Maack, Corine Peifer, Dana Hiller and Irene Dispenza spoke with the professionals from Imaging Services, Laboratory, Biomedical Engineering, Rehabilitation Services, Information Services and Human Resources.
Afterward, the students toured selected departments. Maack and Peifer said that they were very impressed with the blood laboratory’s high-technology and efficiency.
Peifer, who wants to be a biomedical engineer, was fascinated by the way the machines functioned and the speed in which test results are completed.
While Maack learned that bacteria possess specific scent characteristics. Interested in the occupational therapy field, was surprised to see how Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Center was designed. She said the design of the facility, which looks like a home, is structured so therapists may teach their patients how to regain their independence in a home setting.
Hiller was intrigued by the imaging technology. She said the radiology captured her interests and that she appreciated the district's Career Coordinator Colleen Edwards who asked her to attend the
career day. Hiller called the day a, “once-in-a-lifetime experience,” because she was able to learn more about the medical field,” that helped her make career decisions.
The students and Edwards thank Malicky and Wayne Memorial Hospital for being able to participate in this career exploration opportunity.
