A tractor trailer driver was credited with saving the life of a Waymart woman Friday morning, after the woman's car crashed into the back of the trailer and caught fire. The crash occurred on US Route 6, the Casey Highway, in the area of Jessup.
According to State Police at Dunmore, at 6 :11 a.m. Sierra Derrick, age 27, from Waymart, was heading westbound when she became distracted and took her eyes off the road. At this moment, the 2006 Saturn Ion she was operating smashed into the rear of a tractor trailer, also in the right lane.
Ronald F. Roninger, 59, of Lake Ariel, was operating the 2011 International Harvester. Police said that the woman was unconscious and was pulled from the car by Roninger before the vehicle burst into flames. Trooper Richard Bozym said that Roninger saved the woman's life by this action.
Derrick, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Community Medical Center for moderate injuries. Roninger was not hurt.
Trooper Bozym said that Derrick will be cited for careless driving and not wearing a seat belt.
Police were assisted at the scene by Jessup, Archbald and Jefferson Township fire departments, as well as Lackawanna Ambulance. Casey Highway was closed for about two hours until one lane was opened for traffic.
