  • Message from the American Red Cross:
Throughout the Northeast PA Region, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those affected by the recent typhoon, both here and in the Philippines.
The American Red Cross is initially committing $6 million and is sending additional people in support of the global Red Cross response to Typhoon Haiyan.  The $6 million in funding will be used to distribute relief items, repair and rebuild shelters, provide healthcare and ensure access to clean water and sanitation systems.  We expect to make additional financial commitments to the typhoon response in the Philippines as financial donations continue to be made.  A team of five disaster specialists from the American Red Cross will deploy Friday to the Philippines to join a 15-person global Red Cross Emergency Response Team to assist with distributing relief supplies to affected communities.
The global Red Cross network is responding to the emergency needs in the Philippines with food, water, and relief supplies, and the American Red Cross is lending people, expertise and equipment to this effort.  While relief efforts are well underway, blocked roads, destroyed infrastructure and downed communication lines are making the response particularly challenging.
The Philippine Red Cross has begun distributions of relief supplies and is providing meals to people affected by the storm. However, delivery of supplies in the worst affected city of Tacloban has been significantly constrained by damage there to local infrastructure. Specialized emergency response teams from Red Cross societies across the globe are arriving in the Philippines. These include teams that specialize in logistics, disaster assessment, shelter, health, water and sanitation.
    .
The American Red Cross is helping reconnect families separated by this typhoon.  The Red Cross has activated its family tracing services.  If people are looking for a missing family member in the Philippines, please remember that many phones lines are down. If people are still unable to reach loved ones, we can help. If trying to locate a U.S. Citizen, call the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services at 1-888-407-4747.
If you are trying to locate a Non-U.S. Citizen, please contact the American Red Cross Northeast PA Region’s Service to Armed Forces and International Services Director, Jen Pierce at (610)865-4400 ext. 221 or via cell at (610)216-6901.
