Fire broke out at an apartment home on Church Street, Hawley, Saturday night. One tenant was assisted by the American Red Cross, who was in need of lodging, food and seasonal clothing.
Hawley Fire Department was called out at 7:46 p.m. for a structure fire at 724 Church Street. Multiple calls were made to 9-1-1. Upon arrival at scene, heavy smoke poured from the attic.
The apartment building, with a two-story front porch, is located at the corner with Academy Street. It has an apartment downstairs and another upstairs.
Deputy Chief Eugene Krause said that a second alarm for additional manpower and apparatus was requested while they were on the way.
"The fire apparently started at the right hand side rear of the building and spread up the exterior wall to the roof area," Krause reported. He said that the blaze was confined to the exterior of the structure and the attic and roof area with smoke and water damage on the first and second floors.
The first floor apartment was not occupied at the time. The second floor tenant was assisted by the Red Cross with lodging for the night.
No one was injured from the fire or effort to battle the blaze. Hawley Fire Department was assisted on scene by Forest Volunteer, White Mills and Lakeville fire departments, and Hawley Ambulance. Honesdale Hose Co. No. 1 was on standby at the Hawley Fire Station to cover call.
Hawley Borough Police also assisted, and Hawley Borough Street Department brought ant-skid material due to the icing conditions. Fire companies were returning to station at 10:13 p.m.
Krause stated that the State Police Fire Marshal was on scene Sunday morning to investigate the cause. Hawley Fire Department officers were also present. Fire Chief Scott Mead was in command at the scene.
