  • In spirit of the holidays, singing and dancing holiday tunes Saturday, members of the Forest Volunteer Fire Department stood on Rt. 590 dressed in holiday attire to collect donations for a family in need.
Normally, the collections are for the department, but Saturday was for a family of four in the region. Using their sewing skills, a few women created costumes for elves, a present, a tree and Santa Claus.
With the collected funds, volunteers will go shopping later this week andabout a week before Christmas, Santa Claus will deliver the wrapped gifts.
Department Assistant Treasurer, Buddy Tascone was "Buddy the Elf," Saturday and he said that although things are difficult for everyone, Saturday was an opportunity to give back to the community. When the department has the normal three day collections, anywhere from $700 to $800 is collected. But in a matter of a few hours Saturday, people donated $400.
Co-chair of the fundraising projects, Barbara Manzione handed out candy canes Saturday and she said doing the fundraiser has a special place in the members' hearts. She explained that the day is special because many people are struggling and the one day was an opportunity to make sure some children will receive something on Christmas.
Forest Volunteer Fire Department (Company 81) has its station in Kimbles, Lackawaxen Township, about three miles east of Hawley. Their web address is www.forestfirerescue.com.
