  • Greater Pike Community Foundation offers an opportunity for philanthropy with the maximum benefit to the recipient, explained Jim Pedrante, chairman. He appeared before the Pike County Commissioners, Dec. 18, to promote this avenue for doing good.
The Foundation was formed in December 2012. Pedrante said that there a lot of people who want to give back to their community. One can give a donation to a local charity directly, of course. The Greater Pike Community Foundation, however, will put that designated donation in a trust which will build over time and give that same charity 10 to 20 times what the donor originally put into it.
Undesignated gifts to the Foundation are distributed at the discretion of the Foundation's board of directors.
Funds contributed to the Foundation are tracked, and a record of the giving is provided to the donor at the end of the year so that they may be put towards a tax deduction.
All gifts to the Greater Pike Community Foundation are administered by The Luzerne Foundation, a community foundation based in Wilkes-Barre and serving northeastern Pennsylvania. The Luzerne Foundation presently manages over 260 funds of various kinds and has total assets exceeding $24 million.
Predante stressed that the Greater Pike Community Foundation serves all of Pike County, not only Milford. Board representatives are desired from across the county, and are welcome to contact the Foundation with a willingness to serve.
How does it work? You contribute assets and create a fund to support the charitable causes or community needs of your choice. Your assets are then managed by professionals engaged by the Foundation, so that your gift will grow and provide maximum tax benefits. This allows flexibility in your charitable giving, without the legal paperwork, time and expenses associated with administering your own foundation.
They can help you realize your charitable goals and make a difference in the community. You may choose to give now, or later through your will or estate plan. The Foundation can help you create endowments for gifts in perpetuity, or designate individual grants each year.
There are many different causes and charities you may wish to help. Some examples in the region include arts and culture, education, environment, health and human services, historic preservation, recreation, economic and neighborhood development. You may also consider starting a scholarship fund to help students year after year.
Donors can establish a "named" endowment fund with an initial gift of only $1,000 or make a gift of any amount to any of the existing funds established for specific causes.
