  • The first time archivals Honesdale and Wallenpaupack Area played this season was in the championship game of the Jaycees Holiday Tournament.
In that one, Paupack rocketed out to a 14-0 lead en route to a double digit win.
On Thursday night, these two elite girls basketball teams met again, this time in the context of a Lackawanna League Division II battle.
The game went right down to the wire ... as so many in the series have over the years ... before Paupack emerged with an electrifying 48-46 victory.
With this win, the Lady Bucks upped their overall record to 8-1 on the season. Coach Adam Holtzer's squad is now 2-0 in the division.
Honesdale, meanwhile, fell to a disappointing 6-4. The Lady Hornets are now staring at an 0-2 league record.
Both teams return to action next week.
Honesdale travels to the Varden Garden for a tussle with Western Wayne on Monday. Paupack heads down to Milford Tuesday evening to take on Delaware Valley.
    First Quarter
Play in the first quarter was frantic and sloppy.
Honesdale avoided digging itself a deep hole as it did in the Jaycees Tourney, but still trailed 12-9 when the buzzer sounded.
The Lady Hornets scored first off a short jumper by Stacey Hart and immediately went into its trademark full court press. Led by Morgan Birmelin and Katie Miller, the Red & Black forced seven turnovers.
Unfortunately for a big Maple City crowd, most of those opportunities went for naught as the Lady Hornets missed one lay-up after another.
Meanwhile, Bridgette Mann did her best to make Honesdale pay. One of the Lackawanna League's top scorers at 19.5 ppg, Mann worked her way free and knocked down a pair of treys.

    Second Quarter
In the second period, Honesdale once again cranked up the press. This time, though, the Lady Hornets began converting turnovers into points.
Amber Watkins, Jackie Gallik and Taylor Parenti each finished off a fastbreak lay-up in leading the home team to a five point edge.
However, Nicki Mann led a spirited Paupack charge that sliced the lead to just one point, 26-25, at intermission.
A lightning quick senior guard, Mann drained five straight free throws. She then then slashed to the hoop, drew a foul and closed out the half with an old-fashioned three-point play.
    Third Quarter
In the third quarter, Honesdale kept up the pressure and continued forcing turnovers. Each time the Lady Hornets seemed about to seize control once and for all, Paupack came up with a big big play to keep things close.
Honesdale began flexing its muscles down low after the break.
Thanks to the potent one-two punch of Kristen Schmale and Alexis Pfeil, the home team dominated play in tne paint.
The former hauled down a half dozen rebounds, while the later chipped in with a field goal, a free throw, two rebounds and two blocked shots.
Even this wasn't enough to shake the Lady Bucks, though.
Bridgette Mann swished a trey from just two steps inside the halfcourt stripe as the buzzer sounded. That huge three-pointer pulled Paupack back to 38-37 with one period left to play.
    Fourth Quarter
Mann continued her brilliant play in the final stanza. Bridgette would finish her night with a game-high 18 points, including an actobatic highlight reel lay-up.

Nicki Mann was every bit as impressive as her sister. She closed out the night with a double-double, scoring 16 points and snagging 11 rebounds.
For Honesdale, Stacey Hart hustled her way to 10 points and five boards. Birmelin and Miller added eight apiece.
Watkins (six pts), Gallik (five pts) and Schmale (four pts) also contributed key plays.
