Donald MacClean Mercereau, 88, of Venice, FL, passed away on January 17, 2014. He was born July 16, 1925 on Staten Island, NY, and moved to Venice in the late 1970ís from PA where he had resided for many years. Donald was a retired Sandy Hook NJ Harbor Pilot; Veteran of WW II US Coast Guard; a volunteer and Past President of the Board at ACS Venice; Past Commodore of the Venice Yacht Club; Past President of Caledonian Society of FL West; Member and Treasurer of Master, Mate & Pilot in Tampa, FL; and Past President of the Scottish Heritage Society.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Claire Schweizer Mercereau; daughter, Susan Vogt, and son-in-law, Stephen Vogt, of PA; daughter, Barbara McClain, of TN; daughter, Janet Bordeau, and son-in-law, Randy Bordeau, of FL; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Don was predeceased by their son, Donald, and daughter, Diane Bernstel.
Cremation arrangements were made by National Cremation Society.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Health South and Tidewell Hospice for the loving care they both provided during Donís last days.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on February 1, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. At the Venice Yacht Club. Donald was a kind, gentle soul and loved by everyone who ever met him.
