On October 10, 2013, the Wallenpaupack Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society elected its four executive committee members: Giuliana Iona- Chapter president; Natalie Olsommer- Vice President; Lauren Higgins- Secretary; Emma Winagle- Communications Officer. These people are all given specific jobs within the chapter. President Iona will lead the general membership meetings and oversee all service projects.
Our NJHS members have already started serving our school community with our peer tutoring program. Any middle school student who needs extra help in a subject can come to peer tutoring on any of five days a week during tutorial. Peer tutoring is also a chance for members to obtain service hours for the current school year. All students who attend peer tutoring are assisted by honor roll students who work hard to maintain a high grade point average.
Our chapter of NJHS has conducted many service projects in the past, and this year’s assemblage of members plans to do no differently. “I have strong faith in our ensemble of peers for the ensuing term,” says Iona. “Not only are my fellow NJHS members intellectually inclined, but they are obliged to do wonderful things for our society as well. Dealing with such great minds has been quite the honor, and I intend on going above and beyond to achieve great things for the committee and, more specifically, for our school district as a whole.”
At the organization’s recent January meeting, members voted on two service project ideas to benefit the community at large. One focuses on providing care packages to hospitalized children and the other on building awareness and fundraising related to colo-rectal cancer.
