  • HONESDALE - On Wednesday, February 12, eight Wallenpaupack students who were interested in the publishing, illustrating, writing, and graphic design traveled to the editorial offices of Highlights for Children in Honesdale for an informative job shadowing experience.

Highlights employees also talked about their individual and team responsibilities.
Students were impressed by the complexity of the publication process and how much the Highlights team loves their work. They were surprised to learn that the creative staff works approximately ten months in advance of publication. Several editors described the editing process, from selecting manuscripts to reviewing content. Art directors and graphic artists explained how they utilize technology to design layouts, manipulate images, and work with freelance illustrators worldwide.
Wallenpaupack Career Coordinator, Colleen Edwards, noted, “Another interesting aspect that students discovered was how Highlightsmaintains continuity with recurring characters and features, yet infuses fresh content into the magazine by publishing new articles and stories.” The Highlights staff emphasized several themes: collaboration, teamwork, internships, networking, and diversity of work experiences.
Highlights employees hosted a lunch for the Wallenpaupackstudents during which the students had informal conversations with them. Edwards expressed her thankfulness for this opportunity and affirmed, “Our students enjoyed the information-packed tour. They truly appreciated the time that the staff spent sharing their experiences in making Highlights’ publications successful.”
