HAWLEY - The second annual "Hawley Spring Run" is being planned for Sunday afternoon, June 1st. Sheila and Chuck Whitman brought the project to the attention of the Hawley Parks & Recreation Commission, Tuesday night, and were given their blessing.
A copy of their insurance is needed, and the Mayor will coordinate the event with Borough Police.
The event is a 5K "run/walk" which starts and ends in Bingham Park, using the same route as the Hawley Library's 5K. The event begins at 1 p.m. and is rain or shine.
Mrs. Whitman said that last year, 140 people participated and it was a great success. They hosted the event to raise funds for a scholarship in memory of their son Tyler Whitman, who died in 2012 from suicide. A 2011 Wallenpaupack graduate, Tyler was in his first year at college when he died.
They raised enough money at the first Hawley Spring Run to distribute three, $1,000 scholarships to Wallenpaupack seniors.
Also meant to raise awareness about suicide, she said that this year students will need to write an essay about suicide prevention, when applying for the scholarship.
Registration will be done online as well as with paper forms. More information will be provided.
The Whitmans are residents of Wallenpaupack Lake Estates.
