  • HONESDALE - The lawn of the Wayne County Courthouse during April will be dotted with 26 royal blue pinwheels. These are more than just a pretty decoration spinning in the wind. They represent the 26 children abused in Wayne County in 2013.
Prevent Child Abuse America adopted the pinwheel symbol in 2008 to represent the carefree joy  that should accompany childhood. the royal blue pinwheel is now considered a national symbol for the prevention of child abuse specifically during April.
The Pinwheels for Prevention campaign is not just about the sorrow of child abuse, but also a call to community awareness to prevent trauma to our mots valuable and vulnerable. Pennsylvania legislature has shown its commitment to take a greater stand against child abuse by signing 11 new child abuse laws, said officials from Wayne County Children & Youth Services (C&Y).
The hope is that these laws will cause concerned citizens to report suspected abuse, equip investigators to do better investigations, and allow for stiffer penalties for perpetrators, said C&Y officials. "As our nation recognizes April once again as child abuse prevention month, please take a little extra time to positively influence a child, support a struggling parent, and report child maltreatment."
To report child abuse or neglect please call the Pennsylvania Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-932-0313.
